I recently saw a retweet by famous and often controversial South African politician, namely Helen Zille of a tweet by Mr Phumlani Majozi, a South African political analyst about the South African family, the black family to be more precise.
Though I agree with the sentiment expressed here, I think there's some underlying assumptions that are implicit in this tweet. One being that the people who breed children and send them to gogo are breeding out of wedlock, secondly that they send the children back to gogo because they want to and thirdly I think it ignores the lineage of this whole problem, seeing that it’s not a new phenomenon.
Though I agree that some people breed unwisely and abuse their gogos with “unplanned “ children, I wonder if we as a society have done enough to support families, and most especially people like Helen Zille who can influence policy to help incentivice proper family formation, however you may define that for yourself (Nuclear or the extended version like most black people did in past and present ). See what one replier said:
What do we need to do to build the SA family back up to its proper place?
